In store or online, one can now find Washington Island E-KO-Rocks and Rocklaces. If you love the rocks at Schoolhouse Beach, now you can have a reminder of them without facing the $250 fine, or stealing from our beautiful Schoolhouse Beach. These aren’t Schoolhouse Beach rocks but they are a close comparison. Visit Mann’s Mercantile to purchase your own Island treasure.
I was able to ask the owner’s of Deer Run Golf Course and Resort a few questions the other day about their long time business. For 20 years, Dan and Trudy Schelitzche have operated the only golf course located on Washington Island. The nine hole course offers fun and challenge for all levels of golfers, from beginners to pros in a relaxing atmosphere. Deer Run is a regulation 9 hole golf course with a motel, living quarters, miniature golf and restaurant onsite. Trudy is most proud of the friendly atmosphere, one that brings repeat customers every year, running the course and motel themselves allows them to be in contact with their patrons, their personal attention goes into the operations everyday as they run and take care of each part of the business. Customers become friends who keep returning for clean accomodations and great golf. I agree, the course challenges my own poor golf skills, the refreshments are always served ice cold and that everyone should, when they are “North of the Tension Line” come to Deer Run to relax and unwind! The Treasures of Plum Island When the Coast Guard lifesaving station was built on Plum Island in 1896, such facilities were common on the Great Lakes. Today, this may be the only one left. Little wonder then that the Friends of Plum and Pilot Islands was established in 2007 to help restore, preserve and manage the islands’ historic and cultural resources. A year later, Plum and Pilot Islands were added to Green Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Wisconsin. This summer, a five-member Service Maintenance Action Team (MAT) spent nine days stabilizing the lifesaving station. The team removed barrels of lead paint and deteriorated decking and installed vents to prevent mold and moisture on the interior while the refuge and Friends decide if and how to restore the station – and how it would be paid for.
