The Washington Island Players have selected “A Doll’s House” for their winter play.
A Doll’s House is set in the late 19th century Norway. The play deals with a crisis in the marriage of Thorvald Helmer and his wife Nora. The title “A Doll’s House” refers to the merry, but childlike relations between Thorvald and Nora.
Dr. Rank is a friend of the Thorvald and a fairly constant guest at the Helmer home. The problems with the apparently joyful marriage began to appear when the Doctor confesses his love for Nora.
But a more serious problem arises for her when Nils Krogstad, an employee at Thorvald’s bank, threatens to reveal that he had made a loan to Nora some years earlier based on a signature she had forged. Nora has kept this loan a secret from her husband. The revelation of her actions will surely undermine Thorvald.
A fifth character in the play is Nora’s old friend, Christine Linde, a widow, comes looking for Nora’s assistance finding a job. She intervenes with Krogstad and the threat is removed.
But this crisis has torn away the appearances and revealed the lack of authenticity in their marriage. Thorvald and Nora face the fundamental flawed basis of their relationship. In the end Nora is forced to make a dramatic choice.
Dave Ranney is the Director of the play.

A science fiction adventure film based on Suzanne Collins' dystopian novels, critics have praised the film. Having a female heroine who is a worthy role model is just one of the important messages. This second film in the series is even better than the first with a more notable storyline and very compelling acting that can be appreciated by adults as well as teens and preteens.

Spring on Washington Island – what could be better! In every direction there is a scene waiting to be painted; everything from scenery and flowers to buildings, still life and people. We have five full days to learn some new techniques, work out some painting problems, get the creative juices flowing, have lots of fun, and totally immerse ourselves in painting. You are welcome to bring your own photo reference and adapt the lessons to fit your needs and personal photos. There will be plenty of time to paint on your own or do “paint along” sessions. The use of light, translating value into color, design, and “fixing it” techniques will be covered.

Workshop Fee: $275 Member / $295 Non-Member • Students limited to 15 • Classes take place at Sunset Resort.

This is a chance to uncover colors hidden inside you. From lemonade skies to purple cows, we will explore expressive approaches to pigments. We will work with ink and watercolor one of the three days and help bridge the gap between realistic representation and what you really want to say in your paintings. Each day will begin with a short lecture, a demonstration and then, you will have time to paint on your own with one on one instruction. Plan to leave with a renewed understanding of the joy of watercolor.

Washington Island, what a great location to celebrate color and texture! Together we will search and invent new ways to see the world around us. Learn to create interesting and exciting abstract patterns of light and darks  that provide descriptive information as well as creating a mood. Learn to find the most interesting and unusual placement of shapes. With the structure of shapes worked out and the patterns of lights and darks, you can focus on color.  Each day we will explore new subjects from the beautiful landscapes of the Island.  There will be daily demonstrations, plus plenty of painting time with individual help by an experienced  instructor.

Workshop Fee: $325 Member / $345 Non-Member • Students limited to 15 • Classes take place at the Washington Island School.
